Meetings
This section highlights upcoming and completed coin club meetings (and any other events and activities) for the current year. All meetings begin at 6 p.m. at the Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave S, Tukwila, Wash., unless otherwise announced.
As always, the monthly displays that members bring for “show and tell” can feature new acquisitions or Pacific Northwest, in addition to the table topics listed below.
JANUARY
January 8, 2026 – The table topic was “Fire,” and the program was given by Adam Blasquez, who shared the story behind Challenge Coins, their military importance and his own personal experiences with them. These recognition pieces have their roots in Roman times when soldiers who excelled in battle were awarded special coins. America’s first use of Challenge Coins was in World War I. A fascinating corner of the numismatic world.
FEBRUARY
February 12, 2026 – The table topic was “Birds,” and the program was to be announced.
MARCH
March 12, 2026 – Annual SCC Banquet at Angelo’s restaurant in Burien. Members were invited to “Bring spouses, significant others, or family members for an enjoyable evening of good food, fellowship, and numismatic-related auction to benefit the club.” (See the legacy SCC banquet page for a more detailed banquet report.)
APRIL
April 9, 2026 – The table topic was “Reptiles,” and the program was “Foreign Coins Circulating in Colonial America” by David Hunzicker. Colonial America used a mix of foreign coins due to a scarcity of British currency, with the Spanish milled dollar (piece of eight) being dominant, often cut into “bits,” alongside French, Portuguese, and German gold and silver coins. An interesting look into the finances of our earliest commerce.
MAY
May 14, 2026 – The table topic was “Colonies,” and the program was given by Ray Fiorini, who provided a look back at the roots and milestones of the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association. The PNNA was established in 1940 by our very own Seattle Coin Club. Since the passing of Del Cushing in 2018, Ray has been an historian and archivist of the organization, adding to the collection of online memorabilia.
JUNE
June 11, 2026 – The table topic was “Outlaws,” and for the program, Jeff Pritchard gave an overview of the remarkable history behind Ethiopian coinage. From the Queen of Sheba to the ancient Aksum Empire (first coins to show a Christian Cross), from salt money to Maria Theresa Thalers, followed by Italy’s bungled invasion launching Ethiopia’s first sovereign coinage. A fascinating but mostly unknown corner of numismatics.
JULY
July 9, 2026 – The table topic was “Babies.” Graciously stepping up to fill a last-minute speaker change, the program was given by our own collector extraordinaire, Ray Fiorini, who discussed the evolving process he’s used over the years to make thousands of wooden nickles for various coin clubs and for personal use. This should have been an informative and entertaining program. (Ray is making the woods for the Fair which will be depicted on this website.)
AUGUST
August 13, 2026 – The table topic will be “Food,” and for the program, “Think hunting for numismatic treasures in coin rolls is a lost art? Adam Blasquez will explain the modern approach to this age-old method of cherry-picking. From copper cents to 40% silver halves, to previously unknown mint errors, there’s no telling what one can discover with a smart, systematic approach to roll hunting.”
SEPTEMBER
September 10, 2026 – The table topic will be “Science,” and David Edge will discuss Capped Bust Half-Dollars, the monetary workhorses of commerce between 1807 and 1839. Large and at times hectic minting procedures created a staggering 450 distinct die varieties. In addition to the coins themselves, David will explain the secretive Bust Half Nut Club, the most difficult coin club in which to gain membership!
OCTOBER
October 8, 2026 – The table topic will be “Crafts.”
NOVEMBER
November 12, 2026 – The table topic will be “Politics.”
DECEMBER
December 10, 2026 – The table topic will be “Love,” and there is usually a special holiday activity such as a gift exchange.
